The light fountain at the northern end of Swanston Street is a response to the original concept for the John Mockridge Fountain - the winning competition entry by Sinatra Murphy Pty Ltd in association with Aspect Melbourne. The light fountain expresses the concept of an ‘urban forest’ through a rhythm of acrylic, florescent coloured stems and their relationship to light. The artwork is an innovative expression of fountain developed as a high tech waterless design.
The florescent stems reflect changing light conditions creating moods at different times of day and night. The scale of the stem clusters has been informed by human movements and the illusions of light and form created by the work’s materiality. A bosque of trees will contrast with the rhythm of stems and provide shade for the site’s users.
